Etiquette

toby used to pee on cars.

i stopped him, of course, after i realized that the first time or two wasn't an accident. but every chance he got, he'd march right up and lift a leg on the nearest hubcap. astounding.

riley likes to pee on the corner of the pedestrian bridge that we cross every morning on our walk. every morning he tries to lift a leg there, and every morning doug hollers at him. hey!

doug has strong feelings about this. he thinks that dogs should only pee on natural objects. nothing man-made. riley and boscoe disagree. they have staked out all kinds of things that they believe they need to mark--not just once or twice, but every time they walk past.

our neighbor's planter. a small pile of rocks in the corner of another neighbor's yard. various trees; sometimes, every single tree. the trash bin near the drinking fountain. the drinking fountain. fire hydrants (despite realizing that's such a cliche).

so here's a little test for you. scan the following pictures. which are appropriate for peeing on? and which are inappropriate?

it's not a hard test. boscoe and riley would assure you that there are no incorrect answers. but doug would maintain that there are.

That's an easy one of you're a dog, they're all acceptable for peeing on.

Before I moved up here so they could pee anywhere they liked, I used to take them to a popular walking track. There were tons of dogs and we used to call all the peeing that went on "checking their emails".

good one.
when they're particularly poky, sniffing every trunk, we say they're checking their tree-mail.

Sounds like pee-mail to me.

So, dog people, is it OK to deposit your dog's sack of doo into the neighbor's trash can as you walk past?

excellent question, amy. i would say it's fine as long as you're not trespassing--if they've hauled their can to the curb, why not?

doug would say NO ABSOLUTELY NOT.

so i set up a little poll. see what the rest of you think.

Our schnauzer pup has started to mark everything. And I do mean everything. Our son had a friend come for a sleepover. He stepped into the house, sat down his backpack and said hello to us. The puppy walked right up to him, licked his hand, then proceeded to hike a leg and spray a bit of pee on the backpack. I guess it smelled like it didn't belong here. I was horrified and frankly am at a loss. I guess we'll just tell guests to leave all possessions in their cars or at home altogether!

yikes, kayce. neutering him should help.

so should squirting him in the face with a squirt gun when he does something like that.

I know the spray bottle thing works - I have a neighbor whose dog used to yap at everyone, but once she started using the spray bottle on him he changed that habit in a hurry.

Thanks for the suggestions, I am definitely going to try the squirt bottle. Neutering is on the schedule!
