Up North

We celebrated our ninth wedding anniversary by hiking eight miles to Durfee Creek and back.

at about 2:30 that afternoon, on a day when i would normally be at the Sunday Planning Meeting, i was sitting on a mossy birch log, eating a peanut butter and jelly sandwich.

the boys were great. the weather was great. everything was great. every day, we read all morning (i read three books, plus parts of two more; i have broken the back of "ulysses," though i haven't quite finished it yet, and i have fallen deeply in love with "lonesome dove"), hiked for three or four hours in the afternoon, and then went back to the cabin for the evening. the cabin had a DVD player, and we watched some old movies: "the graduate," and "out of africa."

here's the view from our cabin window:

not really our cabin; we rented it for the week. here are the boys on the trail:

here's your faithful blog correspondent, gathering material for the blog with her two able assistants:

on the one day when it was spitting rain (all the other days were sunny and quite nice for hiking), we drove to the end of the gunflint trail to see the fire damage from earlier this year, when they had feared that the whole gunflint would burn. it was quite stark--pine trees that were nothing but burned sticks in the dirt, and rocks that had been burned clean of all moss and lichen and vegetation. it looked quite novembery. but the undergrowth has already sprung back, green and vibrant.

here's a little movie of the boys on the trail. i wish i could do Smell-O-Vision; the fragrance of the forest was so fresh and piney--it was the smell of wet cedar and pine needles and decaying maple leaves.

You're ba-ack, you're ba-ack!

I'm sure you'd rather be hiking, but we've missed you. Great pictures and what a drop dead gorgeous place that is. The dogs are practically grinning.

Wecome back!

oh, boy, we had a great time. i should have been a forest ranger; i belong in the woods. you would not believe how tired these dogs are, though. it's pretty funny to see riley so exhausted.

it's nice to hear that i was missed.

i have a lot of catching up to do!

Wish we got fall color like this. Down south it is but a pale comparison and hasn't even started yet. Beautiful place!

Glad you're back. And what a fantastic week you've had! You have no idea how I envy you. All four of you must've been so happy.
Oh, and I'm with Bobbie - the colours here don't even come close to what you've got. And some of the leaves drop without even changing colours. Very strange that. Maybe it's too wet here throughout the year for great colours to develop?

Anyways, welcome back!

the colors were much more muted this year. last year was spectacular. but this summer was very dry, which makes for less intense colors.

still, it was quite gorgeous. and the dogs are stlill exhausted. even riley, who, as doug so aptly put it, "ran his butt off."

Gorgeous country. Happy dogs. Tired feet. Books and movies. I think you're holding something back. I think there was hot chocolate involved and you didn't tell!

Looks wonderful and I jealous. And thanks for the explanation about the dry summer/less color. I was wondering what was happening with our trees this year! Welcome back!

pixel: haha. i brought along two packets of hot chocolate that i nicked from our hotel room in paris (amy knows what i'm talking about; i sent her some) but we never drank it.

ask me about beer, though. Lake superior pale ale.
and wine....

Happy wedding anniversary, Laurie and Doug! I remember your wedding, which also featured happy dogs!

We must quit our jobs and move to the woods. It's that simple. (If only...)
