Hadn't read the first installment. Your friend having another birthday must be the ultimate little girl headline, very important to you but hardly a surprise to everyone else! The twins were clever with their picture and colour and tabloid size. But grownups also like these things too. I only buy the tabloid size Times, and as for pictures and colour I refer you to our own Sun, Daily Star and Mirror. In fact, they are nothing but. Truly twenty years ahead of their time!
Phew...finished! Boy that was some marathon (for someone like me with the attention span of a goldfish). It was well worth the effort though, thanks.
There were lots of things that came to mind as I was reading, but I'm sure it's all been said in the comments. However, one thing did strike a chord. You mentioned that stories were always too long rather than too short.
I'm a technical writer (or at least I was) and despite what most people think, it's harder to produce a short document than a long one.
thanks, bev. my brothers are just as smart and cute now, at 48, as they were then.
thanks, WT. appreciate your reading the whole thing. i'm leaving this posting at the top of the blog for a few days because "birth of a hack" was linked to by a journalism blog.
and you're absolutely right that it's harder to write short than long. you have to focus more.
what's the famous quote--i would have writtena shorter letter if i'd had more time? i've seen that variously attributed to mark twain, henry david thoreau, and t.s. eliot. but whoever said it knew what he was talking about.
Hello Laurie, and thanks for your comment re A. Burgess. A very similar encounter to mine with N. Mailer. Hoping that you will continue to drop by from time to time. I don't seem to write my blogs so often anymore. Time is not always on my side.
xo
Sorry, this is more of a technical question rather than a comment, I'll make up for it soon!
How do you link a previous post in your current post? I see this all the time and tried the link on the tool bar but not sure if it is a file or http or whatever! After about 20 tries I thought I would but my more techno endowed blogging friends! Thanks!
