An orchid for no reason
It's been a rather grueling week.
I've been filling in as the page one editor, a job that requires skills I don't have: namely, excellent news judgment, an ability to multitask to the nth degree, and the grace to remain calm under incredible pressure. Oh yeah, and the eloquence to speak articulately at meetings about stories I know very little about because they haven't yet been written.
Doug, meanwhile, has had his cold settle in his chest; he's been coughing like a consumptive twenty-four hours a day. He's also had to work late every night this week; on Wednesday night, he didn't get home until 8:30.
And on top of everything else, we're getting six inches of snow. On the second day of spring. It's just not fair.
So imagine my delight when I came home one evening to find a green and purple ProFlowers box on the front doorstep. Inside was this--a graceful, delicate, blooming orchid.
Completely for no reason. No occasion. No birthday. No holiday. No thanks for a good deed done. Just a spontaneous gift.
It came from friends Jeff and Eric, who live in New York. The card read, "Laurie and Doug, You don't have enough work to do. Here's an orchid!"
There are no words ... But there are smiles. Big happy smiles.
Thanks, Jeff. You're a prince! You too, Eric!

and spring comes in a box! What a truly lovely and thoughtful gift.
I love spontaneous, no reason gifts. I think I like them better than any other kind. They often give you a lift when you need it most.
I hope Friday is kind to you both.
I hope you are very successful with this orchid and manage to keep it going for a long time, because it is such a nice gift. Imagine having such dear friends who give it out of the blue.
Tell Doug I hope he gets better soon and you hang in there too.
I'm still feeling stupid from my Toby faux pas, but I would like to comment how lovely, lovely, lovely friends like that are.
Husband has always love orchids, so is in his element here in Thailand, and has a balcony full.

It is the seemingly small things in life that can be so magnanimous.
I hope your Doug recovers his good health soon!
What a lovely gift from your friends - so exotic, so delicate, so totally unnecessary - but such a gift for your spring-starved soul!!!
Just read your swimming/Boston blogs. Very funny! I met the Great Dane in a swimming pool!
Oh what a fantastic present! Hope Spring follows soon. And Doug gets better. And you have less work to do. Can the boys not help out a bit? I mean, they should be old enough by now to do their bit around the house. ;-)
What a wonderful spontaneous gift.
Hope Doug blows out the chest infection soon.
what a wonderful present - sound like great friends, Laurie. A well deserved present.
And my husband is driving up to St. Paul today! Crazy! Will the roads be cleared by 7 pm tonight? Hope so! He's kept his winter weather driving skills better than I have, so I won't worry too much...
It's snowing pretty hard right now, MJ, but they have the roads well-sanded. Don't worry. He'll be fine. This kind of snow melts fast. And it's warm enough (32 degrees) that the salt is doing its job.
What a lovely gift!
Hope Doug feels better soon.
I get kind of cranky when the meteorologists start talking about spring when there's a snowstorm outside. It's the same when they announce that it's winter on the 21st of December, even though it's been cold and snowy for at least two months.
That orchid is gorgeous. What a wonderful gift.
I hope Doug feels better soon.
Very pretty!
We think that Doug should nap with the woofies. That always seems to make our humans feel better. You can join them if you are still feeling stressed from your week. Naps with furry people are good for what ails you!
What a lovely thought.
I know what it's like to be P1 editor - very stressful at times!
the best kind of gift, Laurie.
Move it to where Doug can see it all the time. It will heal his chestiness.
