Serendipity? Or a moral dilemma?

On Saturday, Doug and I got ready to go to my mother's apartment for a Kentucky Derby party. My sister Holly was in town visiting from Seattle, my brother Paul and his family had driven up from Iowa, and my little sister and brothers who live here in the Twin Cities would be there as well.

I was supposed to supply the dessert: brownies.

The dogs barked; the mail was here. I opened the front door and found a large cardboard box on the top step. It was heavy. It was from Texas, where my cousin Patti lives. What th....?

I lugged it into the kitchen, sliced through the tape, and lifted out a round red and white tin. It was full of cookies. Kitchen sink cookies.

Oh my gosh.

Patti bakes cookies for a little tea room down the street from her house. She mentioned to me once that the most popular kind was called "Kitchen Sink" cookies, because they had everything in them but the kitchen sink--oatmeal. Pecans. Chocolate chips. Peanut butter. Raisins.

You'd better send me some, I wrote, not meaning it. That was two months ago. And now, suddenly, here they were.

I pried off the lid and ate one. Then I ate another one. Then I slowly devoured a third, while trying to decide what to do.

On the one hand, I had been tasked with providing the dessert for my mother's party, and here I had two dozen or so delicious homemade cookies just fall into my lap. Clearly, I should bring them to Trish's.

On the other hand, Patti made those cookies for me. I am morally obligated to eat them all myself, aren't I?

I thought about this as I ate a fourth cookie.

Then I made my decision.

What did I decide? And what should I have decided?

My mouth just watered... seriously! I'm headed to bed before I read any more delicious blogs!

Yum. If you ate four, there were only twenty left. Clearly, that's not enough to feed your entire enormous family.

Hoard is such an ugly word:-) You are simply fully appreciating Patti's gift - if you went for the first choice of course:-)

I would've loved to polish them off all by myself. With a bad conscience of course. I think I would've ended up taking them to the family gathering anyway. The four or so that were left...

The cookies were a gift. A gift is, of course, exempt from the "sharing is right" rule.

I would say half'n'half so you get the best of both, a little hoarding and a little sharing. You need another poll button!!

I have met a couple of kitchen sink cookies and hoarding is the only sensible thing to do. After all, someone may not like raisins or nuts and end up wasting a perfectly good cookie.

Anyway, since Mr. Darcy has been transformed by Miss Bennet, I'm sure he welcome you back without prejudice to work on your "character" a bit more.

Let's see, you have a large family. I believe I would have baked a batch of my so-so brownies and taken a few of the delicious cookies to share. Then I would have the rest for myself as Patti obviously intended you to have.

i don't want to give away the answer, but i will give you a hint: i came home from work last night and immediately pounced on two kitchen sink cookies and devoured them on the spot.

the dogs went after the crumbs.

all three of us were pretty happy.

I would've gotten them out of the house as quickly as possible. I've no willpower when it comes to cookies.

I really shouldn't read about cookies before I've had my dinner. Mmmmm.

haha, very good!
Of course I went against my natural instinct which would be to hoard, haahahahahaahhaa, malevolent laugh....and voted pc... ;)

Mmm...I LOVE kitchen sink cookies. Especially when they're warm. Did you nuke one to get it gooey? Heaven on earth. I really hope you kept them all for your lucky little self.

oooh, amy, i hadn't thought of that. fortunately, i still have five cookies left. i will definitely nuke one when i get home.

-ann, willpower? cookies? me neither.

I didn't see any cookies.
No, I never received any cookies...

You probably decided to take them to the party just to get them out of the house!
