Open wide, Riley

He's still at the vet. His glucose level was fine, so they went ahead and put him under. But because it's Riley, there was drama. Here's the report from Doug:
...procedure went well. jennrich said they had to extract a tooth that turned out to be damaged. molar on upper right. he said the outer wall of the tooth had been broken, which is something that can happen when dogs chomp on things, etc.. riley may feel some pain for a few days so jennrich is prescribing a painkiller. otherwise, other teeth looked good. he should eat light tonight and we may need to put water on his food to make it easier to chew. he's sending info on how to tell if a dog is bothered by tooth pain.
I'm going out to dinner with a friend and won't be home until late tonight, so I won't get to see the little guy until long after he's downed his half-rations of watery food and been doped up with pain meds. He'll be in good hands with Doug. But I won't feel quite right until I see him myself.
(And just to set the record straight: I know he looks ferocious in this picture, which is one reason why I like it. But really he was photographed in mid-yawn.)

Poor Riley.. Watered down food, eww.. At least there are pain meds!
Aw, toothache is so horrible - poor Riley. Bet you can't wait to get home to see him.
I'd be curious to know what signs a dog gives off for tooth pain. Is Riley generally pretty stoic? Gracie has had some whopper ear infections that I never suspected because she never showed any sign whatsoever that she was in pain. And the vet said given the condition of her ears at the time, there had to have been pain.
amy, i'll let you know.
when boscoe had his surgery, he exhibited the classic signs of a dog in pain: hiding in a dark corner, for one. restlessness. inability to sleep. whimpering.
grabbing me by the lapels and saying, GIVE ME DRUGS, DAMMIT!
riley is much, much more stoic than boscoe. he thinks nothing of suddenly, on a walk, thrusting his entire face into a scratchy bush if he thinks he sees a rabbit. he emerges with cuts and scrapes on his nose and near his eyes, but he never acts like he feels a thing.
Glad to hear the procedure went well. Sorry to hear about the tooth pain. He'll be alright in a day or so. And I bet he'll scoff down that watered down food!
Time to get back to the squirrels, that's what Riley will say when he comes home, I bet.
Bless him. Hope he's back to chomping pain-free soon!
Glad he came through the surgery well. The meds will give him a good night's sleep.
Love that photo:-)
We'll all be thinking of him...and you.
Glad Riley is ok or will be soon.
I like the big tooth photo too! I am glad Riley is back and can send that bear back to Duluth or where it came from. He can do his own squirrel stuff now.
Kisses.
Stella
poor guy. he's awfully woozy.
That doesn't sound like fun for any of you!
Poor guy. I hope he can eat cookies.
Poor Riley. No fun for any of you. Hope he'll soon be right as rain and back to chasing squirrels.
Good thing you popped for the teeth cleaning. It's easy to miss dental issues in dogs and cats. They don't complain or their complaints lack specificity so you the owner have no idea something's wrong.
I thought for sure I would have to have Alfie's teeth cleaned shortly after I got him. But good food and bones have removed a lot of the staining and buildup. And his breath improved along with the look of his teeth. I think he can wait another year or so for a teeth cleaning, although I would love to be able to do it now because they could clip his nails down to nothing while he's under euthanasia.
Er, em, um. Didn't mean to imply you don't feed your dogs good food. I was referring to Alfie eating El Muy Cheapo at the humane society in southern Minnesota for eight months and El Cheapo at the humane society here in town for four months. Lots of sugar and food colors in that cheap stuff.
And I'm not criticizing the humane societies, either.
Oh, shit.
heh. relax! three dog blog is a take-no-offense zone.
and i wish the boys could eat bones the way alfie does. it would help a lot. but my boys are goddamn delicate flowers.
he doesn't look ferocious -- just a toothy yawn.
So sorry he had to have that done. but so glad he has people who take care of him.
Makes one wonder about all the poor little guys around that never get any veterinarian care.
