The old man

We are stil in Dublin. Had a great day today taking the DART out to Blackrock and then hiking along the coast to Sandycove, at Dun Laoghaire, and touring the Martello Tower where James Joyce lived for a week or so, before fighting with Oliver St. John Gogarty and walking all night back to Dublin.

It was spitting rain and the waves were thundering against the rocks and all in all it was a lovely, invigorating day. But one with a disturbing beginning. We awoke to find an email from Karli, the young woman who is caring for Boscoe and Riley. A few days after we left, Boscoe stopped eating and started peeing all over the house.

She got him to eat by sitting with him in the kitchen, but she couldn't stop the peeing. So she brought him in to see Dr. J and it turns out that sweet old Boscoe, at nearly 14 yearss of age, has developed diabetes.

So it was a serious and somber morning after reading that message. We will need to change hiis diet andd give hiim insulin injections after every meal. Thank goodness for Karli, who has been a vet tech for five years; she recognized the signs and knew to bring him in. Aand she knows how to give the injections, and will do it until we come back (late tomorrow night). She's certainly doing much more than she had ever bargained for, cleaning up pee, taking the dog to the vet, and administering insulin.

We are very grateful. Also very worried. If any of you have cared for a diiabetic dog, comments welcomed.

It was good to have a vigoous, blustery, fast-walking day to blow our worry away a little.

And as you can see, this rickety keyboard has only gotten worse. Home soon. Reports to follow.
