Um, maybe it's just sleeping...

Early this morning, Riley was whimpering at the window. I joined him to see what it was he was looking at, and saw a rabbit lying in the neighbors' yard. It was sprawled out on its side, and as I watched it gave one feeble kick and then lay still.
I'll spare you the picture.
You can't blame Riley for this one. He was in the house, and the rabbit is on the other side of the fence. Something else got it, but what? It has no marks on its body (at least, none that we could see from several yards away) and nothing seemed interested in eating it. Poison? A raccoon? A cat?
And then I thought about Bunnycam, and I raced down the basement stairs. The window well was empty.
I've checked it several times since then, including five seconds ago. No bunny.
I suspect that is our bunny lying dead, or dying, in the neighbors' yard. It is surprising what a sharp pang of sadness that gives me. I'd grown quite attached to the little guy over the past few weeks.
