Nerves!

Late in the day on Tuesday, I got an email from the publicist at the Press. It was short and to the point: "News to Me galleys are in. Would you like me to send you one?"
And at that, my hands went cold, my heart started pounding, and my stomach began to churn. I was a wreck for the rest of the day.
Galleys! It's almost a book! Oh god what have I done?
Well, duh. It's not like this was a surprise. I spent last weekend reading page proofs (and finding errors! Gak!). I've seen the cover design. I knew galleys were coming any day now. None of this is a surprise, and it's all part of the process, and it was all to be expected, and ... why am I so nervous?
I did not feel this way with my first book. I was completely sanguine, confident and blase. (I was also young and foolish. It also wasn't really my book--I researched and wrote it, but it was another woman's memoir.) So I didn't expect to be so nervous this time around.
But I am.
I should receive the galleys tonight in the mail, I think. And the book will be available for pre-ordering on Amazon very soon.
Meanwhile, my first book has been published in Russia. (It's the story of a Finnish American woman who moved to the Soviet Union as a child and lost her father in Stalin's purges.) At top you see the Russian version, and below is the original version. Very cool.
Today's nature note: A balmy, breezy morning. We've had such a dry spring, but today they are promising rain. Talk about nervous: Riley is already cowering, anticipating thunderstorms.

This is such exciting news for you. No wonder you're nervous!
Enjoy the ride, Laurie.
Exciting times indeed!
I'm thrilled for you!
Keep breathing!
That's exciting! And now I'm off to find out what a galley is. :)
i can see why you'd be nervous - it's a big deal! i'm so excited, and i will be pre-ordering as soon as it's possible to do so. i also want this new book... i'm off to see if i can buy it on amazon.....
The anticipation must be nerve wracking indeed, but so exciting!
I would be very nervous too, but you're surrounded by very friendly people who will support you through the worst of the nerves. Still, it's quite an endeavour and I'm proud of you.
Woohoo, nearly there! So excited with you. :) And yes, will it be on sale on Amazon.co.uk as well? Will have to go check...
That sure is exciting news you got there!

Isn't it surprising, when we find ourselves reacting in a way that is younger than we are?
Good luck, and I look forward to reading!
Aden and Babaloo, I am pretty sure that the book will be available on amazon.uk but I'm not positive.
the Press has a London office, and the price on the back of the book is noted both in American dollars and in British pounds.
Well now is the time to sit back and enjoy the ride..it is what it is..what kind of horrible mistakes did you find last weekend?? I bet they were teeny tiny errors that no one else would notice. You need a shot of confidence..have a beer! :)
Oh, Laurie. I'm excited and nervous for you! And delighted that I'll soon be able to pre-order on Amazon.
Yay!
Far Side wondered what errors I found. OK, here goes:
1) i called the flag the masthead. the flag on the newspaper is the name in giant letters across page 1. the masthead is the box inside the paper that lists the top executives--editor, publisher, etc.
2) i said that one guy had a Ph.D. when actually he has a D.A. (doctor of arts)
the other errors weren't mine, but were typesetting errors (backwards quotation marks) and one sentence that had been rewritten by someone and made inaccurate.
It's such a big accomplishment! Putting yourself out there is big time nervousness-inducing I'd say. So cool for you; try and enjoy it too!
You have written a book. YOU HAVE WRITTEN A WONDERFUL, DELIGHTFUL BOOK. A SECOND BOOK.
I am proud to know ya. Can't wait to buy copies for all my friends for Christmas. Except, can't give you one. Can I, now?
Dark chocolate or milk? For a congratulatory gift? And for Christmas?
I can help Erin. A galley is a sort of boat the Romans used to use.
[Thinks: Or is it the kitchen in the sort of boat the Romans used to use?]
