And now we have two dogs

Instead of a dog and a puppy, I mean. Rosie is now 28 pounds. She is not quite five months old, so she is still very much a puppy, but just look at her! She looks like a dog now--a skinny, sleek dog. There is nothing round about her anymore.

I was out of town on Tuesday, so Doug took her to obedience class, where they were practicing "drop it." She is so treat-obsessed that she learns immediately. Drop that? If I drop that I get a treat? OK, I'll drop it.  Sometimes she'd drop whatever it was she was supposed to drop before she even got the command.

It also means that if you don't have a treat, good luck. I will have to carry liver bits around in my pockets for the rest of my life.

Next week is her final class--a graduate! Our first! And then on Saturday we start leash training, and not a moment too soon. She has discovered rabbits (she is, after all, part harrier, a dog bred to hunt hares) and squirrels, and she pulls so hard, pushing with her back legs, trying to get up a head of steam, only my poor abused hand wrapped in the leather leash keeping her from bolting off.  Treats don't work very well in that circumstance, so I am curious how the training will go.

Riley will take the training, too, even though he is pretty good on the leash by now, being 10 years old and all. But what the heck--maybe we can pick up some tricks to keep him from lunging at bicycles and rollerbladers. He doesn't lunge all the time anymore, but he still does whenever the spirit moves him.

Meanwhile, summer is trundling right along. We took the dogs to the coffee shop Saturday morning and got caught in the rain going home, and took them again this morning and got sunburned. This weekend I planted a clematis, we replaced an azalea that had died, we mowed the lawn, we deadheaded the geraniums, we grilled burgers, we entertained friends, we threw the tennis ball 1,000 times for Rosie, we sat outside and read, we sat on the back porch and read, we sat on the front porch and read.

It is almost midsummer. I have vowed to unfriend on Facebook the first person who, that day, notes as a status update that the days are now getting shorter. But I do wonder: Why doesn't winter trundle along at the same brisk pace as summer?

So shiny and smart, too. Congratulations on graduation.

I love that you cherish summer as much as I do. Enjoy a walk for me, will you? I'm housebound with a broken leg.

Tyke is still not trained on the leash and pulls me along merrily when he sets his mind to it. He weighs 40 lbs and is very strong. Rosie has gotten very big compared to Riley and she isn't done growing yet. It's a good thing that you're getting all this training done now.

we decided the other day that we were tired of our 50 pound dog walking us. So we got a harness - I see Rosie has one. Today was day two and I am in bliss. Sadie has not taken me for a walk in twenty four hours!! WE shall see if it stays but, for now, its the best 7.50 we have ever spent!

the harness is soooo necessary, suebedo. it really cuts down on the pulling. i'm hoping that training will cut down a little more.

our obedience teacher recommends one that has a d-ring both in the back (gives the dog more freedom) and in the front (gives the owner more control).

it's like a mullet, she said: business in the front, party in the back.

Look at those good doggies sitting so nice.

I am very interested to read about leash training. That is my biggest issue with Murdoch. He is a major puller when there are other dogs or cars or people around and completely oblivious to treats, even though he is super food-oriented the rest of the time.

It is the one big FAIL for Ansa but she is absolutely obedient without a leash and heels, stops and sits on command. So I tend to go leashless with her as she is so strong she can tow me up a hill. Seriously.
I should get a dogcart for pulling logs out of the forest :)
Rosie is sooo adorable and so alert. Riley has a new lease on life, looks like.

Rosie is one smart girl. I think she'll get the hang of the leash training. Maybe.

So you do deadhead geraniums. I was looking at mine yesterday and wondering. Now I'll just have to figure out how much to take off. And if you find THE ANSWER to the leash lunging issue please let me and my aching shoulders know. And yes the whole time variation between summer and winter and between being young and bored and older and frantically racing. Inquiring minds want to know ...

Maery Rose--deadheading geraniums is easy. just snap the stem off right below the dead blossom. the plant will continue to bloom either way, but it will bloom a little faster if you do this.

Irene, Tyke is 40 pounds?? wow. i think of him as just a little guy. but that's pretty big. you should get him a harness--much easier to control him.

Yes, why is it that winter seems long and drawn out, unbearably so while summer appears so briefly? The seasons just don't cooperate with the calendar!

Don't you just love those days of reading in the garden, on the porch, and anywhere you please? Just another joy of summer.

Can't wait to hear about the leash training. Maybe I can pick up some pointers!

Hi there, Boy Rosie looks almost full grown-she is so big for just five mos. Our Hunter is approaching 7 mos and all of 9 lbs. He still gets those crazy streaks like Rosie did but after walks he gets so tired. Great job with the drop command-I'm still working on sit. Bichon's can be stubborn and have a mind of their own. So good to hear you are enjoying summer as much as I am-love it I say. Have fun with the next level class; Rosie seems so smart that it should be easy.
Have a great weekend.
